Ex-LMS 4MT 2-6-0 No 43019 is seen on shed standing alongside the Rugby to Stafford mainline whilst in the background an ex-LNWR 7F 0-8-0 'Super D' runs light engine to Rugby circa 1949. Built at Horwich works in June 1948 No 43019 remained in service until May 1968 when it was withdrawn from Lostock Hall shed to be scrapped in September 1968 by Arnott & Young of Dinsdale (near Darlington). The class was the last to begin construction under LMS ruling and was designed by George Ivatt, CME from 1946 to 1951, with influences from French and American designs. Erratic steaming was apparently a feature of the class early on, but Swindon Works experimented with No 43027, removing its double chimney and blastpipe and using single versions instead. The successful result paved the way for the modification of the engines already in service and the adaptation of the remainder to be built under BR, commencing with No 43050 (into service August 1950) and culminating in No 43161, which was completed in September 1952 at Doncaster Works. The Mogul was allocated to Nottingham (16A) at this time, then switched to Cricklewood in November 1952 for a long stint of 10 years and was subsequently attached to Wellingborough depot (15A), Stoke on Trent (5D), Lower Darwen (10H) and finally Lostock Hall (10D) to eke out the last two years.
