Ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire 7F 0-8-0 No 1583 is seen standing in the yard after being serviced ready for its return trip circa 1925. The LNWR and L&Y had merged in 1922 a year prior to the formation of 'big four' which saw 123 railway companies effectively grouped in to the London Midland Scottish, the London North Eastern, the Great Western and the Southern Railway companies. Built at Horwich works to a class 1546 design in January 1914, No 1583 was assigned the LMS running number No 12877 in the late 1920s and remained in service until October 1948 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped at Horwich works.
