London Midland Scottish Railway Route: Nuneaton to
Leamington
Kenilworth Station: lnwrk164a
This close up of image 'lnwrk164' shows the goods yard which
was sited off the down (Coventry) line at the Coventry end of the station. The
original station's goods yard was sited at the other end of the station
pre-1883, whilst this side of the original station housed the coal yard
sidings. The original coal sidings were in place by 1846 as were the two
sidings, opposite Whitemoor Brickworks, that acted as both head shunts to the
original coal yard (later to be the post-1883 goods yard) and refuge sidings
for passing goods traffic.
The rebuilding of the station not only led to the swapping
of the locations of the goods yard and coal yard sidings etc but also in the
size of each one. The new coal yard sidings whilst having the same number as
before, three, were much longer and there was a greater amount of yard
available for local coal merchants. The goods yard enjoyed a greater number of
sidings having three of moderate length compared to two curved lines, joined
together at each end, ending at a wagon turn table where three short lines
radiated off to a goods shed, carriage landing and raised platform for
off-loading.
