London Midland Scottish Railway Route: Nuneaton to
Leamington
Kenilworth Station: lnwrk164
Although not as sharp as other photographs this remains one
of the author's favourite photographs to the extent that he commissioned Peter
Annabel to paint it in oils. An unidentified LNWR 4-4-0 is seen passing through
the station with a very long passenger train, probably an excursion given the
board on the smokebox door. The goods shed can just be seen on the extreme
right of the photograph whilst the three sidings in front are made up of a
mixture of open wagons and two tank wagons.
It is believed that the erection of such a tall signal box
was to eliminate the need for two signal boxes. Kenilworth had two yards, one
either side of the station. The nearest to the camera (down line, Coventry end)
was the general goods yard with shed whilst the other was on the down line,
Leamington end. The signal box was of sufficient height to be able to view both
sets of pointwork.
