Close up of image 'lnwrk156' showing seven plank railway wagons including a Coventry Colliery Private Owner vehicle in the yard of Cherry Orchard Brickworks. The other two wagons are LMS owned and still full of coal whilst the Coventry Colliery wagon has been emptied. By definition brickworks were heavy users of materials, clay for the bricks and coal to fire them in the large ovens, and whilst they could be sited at locations where the correct kind of clay existed coal would always need to be brought in. Therefore most large brickworks needed to be rail connected. Next to the wagons is a large stack of bricks which might be loaded into the wagons after they had been cleaned and straw laid down to stop the bricks from rubbing together. Careful examination of the top two planks on the LMS wagons show that they are deeper than the remainder. This was because the weight of the load would be less at the top and therefore the planking need not be as strong as the bottom planks.
