LMS Route: Nuneaton to Coventry

Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 'Super D' No 49439 is seen at the head of a northbound freight as it approaches Foleshill station. The munition sidings on the right are now derelict and overgrown with only the passing loop remaining in operational condition.

Number 49439 was built at Crewe in April 1922 and given the LNWR running number 36 before being renumbered 9439 by the LMS. At some stage No 49439 has acquired a tender with a cab which whilst not perfect offered crews some comfort when running tender first. Withdrawn from Buxton in December 1962 and scrapped at Crewe works in May 1963 No 49439 has less than a year in service as the photograph was taken on 24th June 1961.
