A lithograph of Hardwick's original station building seen shortly after the opening of the L & B. As originally designed by Hardwick, the arrangement should have been symmetrical about the centre line of the main building with a matching set of gates on the right. Unfortunately the site was not big enough and the right-hand archway was built butting up against the existing houses. The building was designed to compliment the grandeur of Euston's building but was of a lesser status reflecting the fact that Birmingham was not even a city at the time of its opening.
