The new shed built by BR had an extremely short operational life. In fact it probably lasted longer as a store for withdrawn locomotives than it did as a working shed. The BR structure was basic and functional as can be seen by this photograph. It was essentially a three sided box designed to keep both enginemen and locomotives dry with light provided by side windows and roof lights and the smoke taken away by a more efficient extraction system.
