LMS stations and trains

This close up of image "lnwr620" shows the amount of advertising posters placed on the back wall. The platform canopy appears to be covered with lead sheeting all supported by hollow cast iron pillars. The end column shows the two signal arms referred to in image "lnwr620a". The arms look as if they are pivoted in the centre of the arm and not as is current practise at one end.

These would be operated by hand at this time as there was no interlocking signals and points operated from a signal box. They are currently placed at danger and will only be moved to the "off" position when the train departing from platform 1, or passing directly through without stopping, had reached either their appointed time to depart/pass.

Trains were "pathed on a time basis prior to the introduction of the "block" system. This meant that trains departed after each other after a given amount of time which obviously had drawbacks if trains were delayed or took longer to travel to the next station. The "block" system effectively divided the line into separate short sections and were only allowed into the next block when the previous train had exited the section. C1860
