View of middle section of No 1 platform, past the footbridge and adjacent to WYMANS news agents. The transport of mail bags was a major feature of railway life, particularly in the early hours of the morning. Mail bags had to be sorted into a coherent order with bags placed at the appropriate point along the platform so that they aligned with the mail vans of each train. To aid in this process the columns of the station roof have been chalked with the city name for that particular location. These in turn demonstrated just how easy it was to travel to various parts of the country. Derby. Leeds Lincs are just some of the names chalked on the immediate column. 10th April 1953
