British Railways built 2MT 2-6-0 No 46445 is seen at the head of a Leamington to Nuneaton local passenger train

British Railways built 2MT 2-6-0 No 46445 is seen at the head of a Leamington to Nuneaton local passenger train traversing the new Leamington branch junction. Although an LMS design it was built at Crewe works in February 1949 some fourteen months after the LMS was nationalised and consequently should be regarded as a British Railways built locomotive. As with all locomotives built after nationalisation the modernisation plan of 1955 saw their useful working life curtailed by some twenty years being replaced with untried diesels many of which were themselves scrapped by the end of or just after the cessation of steam in 1968. Number 46445 remained in service until June 1966 when it was withdrawn from Saltley shed in Birmingham to be scrapped in October 1966 by TW Ward Ltd of Killamarsh.
