Midland Railway 2-6-0 No 2233, a 'Yankee Mogul', is seen standing on the centre road between Platforms 4 and 5 at the head of an empty passenger working. These unusual locomotives were the result of an order by the Midland Railway at the turn of the century to solve a crisis of a lack of motive power at a time when no British locomotive builder had the capacity to fulfil orders. In 1899 the Midland Railway purchased 30 of these moguls from Baldwin with a further 10 from the Schenectady Locomotive Works. The last one, No 2233, was withdrawn in 1915 which was a very short operating life so clearly for whatever reason they were not judged a success. C1910
