Ex-LMS 2P 4-4-0 No 40646 is seen standing at the East end of Platform 7 having been smartly turned out on a SLS special excursion. The photograph was taken just a few weeks before the locomotive was withdrawn in May 1962 from Bescot shed to be scrapped in September 1962 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. Allocated to Bescot shed No 40646 is thought to have been the last remaining LMS 2P 4-4-0 in service which was why it was booked on the SLS special and the reason for the crowds of enthusiasts on the platform. Built as at Crewe works in September 1931 this class was in essence an updated version of the Midland Railway's 483 class with 6ft 9in driving wheels instead of 7ft and with the driver on the left instead of the right of the cab although the latter change was not effected immediately.
