Ex-LNER A1 4-6-2 No 60114 'WP Allen' is seen standing at the East end of Platform 8 waiting to return to the Eastern Region on 8th August 1964. Because it was built by Doncaster Plant in August 1948, No 60114 should perhaps be better described as a British Railways built locomotive to a LNER design. Irrespective of its lineage the A1 class were recognised as being a very successful design although the coming of the diesel age meant that they, in common with every locomotive built post Second World War, were to be scrapped before their time. In this instance, No 60114 was withdrawn in December 1964 from Doncaster shed to be scrapped in May 1965 by Hughes Bolckow of North Blyth.
