The very tall chimney would appear to be part of a brickworks which would support conjecture that the the three and five plank open wagons in the yard are loaded with bricks. Bricks were a very heavy load and would be stack with straw packed in between to prevent dame age during transit. On the left is a small brick built hut which is probably being used by the yard foreman as an office. All goods being shipped would require paperwork both on the side of the wagon to indicate the consignee and the destination of the wagon. In addition, documentation would be needed to aid the railway to track the load and to ensure that payment was made. In instances where the merchant was using their own wagons then a return charge would also be required to bring the empty wagon back to its home yard.
