LNWR 4-4-0 No 1978 'Merlin' is seen at the head of a short train approaching Shilton station circa 1922-3. Built in July 1903 at Crewe works No 1978 was rebuilt in December 1921 as a Renown class locomotive. The front drivers are equipped with sand pipes fitted with windshoes. Philip Millard of the LNWR Society writes, 'the first three vehicles are North Staffordshire Railway milk vans (the first being an aeroplane van conversion) and the fourth is an LNWR 45 ft 0 in passenger brake van. The train is carrying express passenger lights, but I do not find any trace of it in the July 1923 Working Time Table.'
