Close up of image 'lnwr_oldmil1462' showing ex-LNWR 2P 0-6-2T No 6890 and ex-LNWR 2F 0-6-0 No 8430 and the family likeness shared by all LNWR locomotives circa 1938. Despite the 0-6-2T locomotives never being fitted with a Belpaire firebox, its boiler being equipped with round topped fireboxes until the very end, Webb and his successors adopted other features in their design which made a LNWR locomotive instantly recognisable. The chimney, large dome on the boiler, angular side sheets to cab or tank sides, coal rails on the bunker or tender and of course the ubiquitous use of black paint. The very distinctive cylinder covers under the smokebox which can be seen in the photograph were another. Both the 'Watford Tank' No 6890 and 'Cauliflower' No 8430 were built at Crewe works, in October 1889 and May 1902 respectively with No No 6890 being withdrawn from Edge Hill shed in Liverpool in November 1945 whilst No 8430 was withdrawn from Crewe South shed in February 1953, both being scrapped at Crewe works shortly afterwards.
