Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 'G2a' No 8921 is seen on an empty freight
working as it approaches Kenilworth. It is often forgotten that the
transportation of coal in dedicated wagons meant that one load of coal required
the transport costs of a round trip to be calculated in to the over all cost of
delivery. One method of trying to reduce this cost was the 'pooling'
arrangement whereby Private Owners could share their wagons with others.
The pooling arrangement meant that on being emptied the
wagon would be found another load nearby. The railway companies own wagons were
in essence operated on the same basis, the supplier of the goods or merchant
paying just for the one trip albeit at a premium rate. Despite these attempts
to keep the wagons full inevitably wagons still needed to be return empty to
balance the stock. C1938
