This close up of image 'lnwr_oldmil1453' LNWR 0-8-0 'G2' No 9436 shows that despite hauling a long mixed goods train with at least 100 tons of coal in 12 wagons there is not a sign of smoke while the safety valves are blowing off. The sight of a camera obviously still held a fascination with the enginemen as both driver and fireman are looking towards the camera.

Number 9436 was built at Crewe in March 1922 and, like many of its classmates, was still active into the final decade of steam on BR metals being withdrawn from Springs Branch (Wigan) shed in June 1959 and being scrapped at Crewe Works in the same month.
