LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Lichfield

A 3-car Derby Suburban DMU, later TOPS class 116, leaves Butlers Lane for Birmingham New Street in May 1966. These units started to appear on Birmingham - Lichfield services about this time having previously been Western Region sets allocated to Tyesley and used on services out of Birmingham Snow Hill. Later they took over completely and supplemented by cast offs from elsewhere remained on the route until electrification. Note the blank destination indicator above the centre cab window, probably the correct blind had not yet been fitted. The bridge carries Butlers Lane and as there was no footbridge it was the only official public route between the up and down platforms. Andy Lawton
