Nechells Power Station: nechells113

Central Electricity Generating Board 0-6-0T No 3 hauling a rake of empty mineral open wagons from the Nechells Power Station

Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) 0-6-0T No.3 hauling a rake of empty mineral open wagons from the Nechells Power Station to Bromford Bridge exchange sidings. The massive concrete cooling towers of Nechells B dominated the landscape. No.3 was purchased new in 1949 from Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne and used during the construction of the Nechells B Power Station. It was a powerful locomotive with 3ft 8in wheels and 18 x 24inch outside cylinders. A second identical locomotive (No.4) was transferred to Nechells from Meaford Power Station in 1951 and a third identical locomotive (No.8) was re-allocated there from Ham Hall Power Station in 1966. In June 1972 the first two were sold into preservation at the Shackerstone Railway Society and No.8 is believed to have been scrapped.
