Coventry Ordnance Survey Works Wagon No 2 built in March 1907 by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company

Coventry Ordnance Survey Works Wagon No 2 built in March 1907 by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company. These low-sided open wagons were the only wagons owned by the company. It is uncertain whether two or four wagons were built, the wagon builders records show two ordered in February 1907 and two more in the following month (but was this a duplication?) The wagons measured 14'6" x 6'11" x 1'9" with two planks and drop sides with pin and chain fastenings. Body colour was dark red with white letters shaded black. Wagon ends were slightly raised and one doorstop each side was shortened to accommodate the brake lever. They were described by the builder as 'ordnance wagons'. The exact purpose of these wagons is unknown, they were certainly not for internal use as they were registered with a main line railway company, the registration plate can be seen on the solebar. Most likely they were used as barrier wagons on the main line, protecting the overhang of the main load, and probably also loaded with detachable smaller parts.
