Griff Colliery: misc_gc030
View of 0-6-0ST Hunslet No 222 'Britannia' at Griff Sidings,
on the ex LNWR branch on 19th September 1955. Built in 1879 the locomotive was
bought third hand for £450 in June 1894 from the Alexandra (Newport &
South Wales) Docks & Railway at Newport. Another inside cylinder 0-6-0
saddle tank she was supplied new to Beckett & Bentley for a contract at
Rochdale. The locomotive was similar to 'Good Luck' in several respects and
perhaps some degree of fleet standardisation was obtained as a result of her
purchase, although this was probably more by coincidence than forethought!
However compared to 'Good Luck' the brake power was only derived from brake
blocks being applied to the middle and rear axles only.
