Ex-E&WJR 0-6-0 No 15 is seen taking on water outside Stratford upon Avon's shed on a winters day. The short water crane is a throwback to the early days of the E&WJR when the height was sufficient to top up the side tanks of the 0-4-4Ts locomotives which first met the needs of the railway. It was only when the line to Broom opened, and with it the need to handle goods traffic, that tender locomotives were purchased. The water crane can be seen to be in operation in 1907 in image 'smjsa295' but was replaced by the LMS at a later date, before the shed was rebuilt as evident from image 'smjsa59b'. The power classification was displayed as a suffix to the number on the buffer beam which was an unususal practice. Built by Beyer Peacock in 1904, the locomotive was allocated No 2308 by the LMS but whether it carried the number before it was scrapped in 1924, one year after the SMJ became part of the LMS, is not known to the author.
