LMS Route: Stratford Midland Junction - The Shakespeare Route

Stratford on Avon Station: smjsa295

In the distance the original E&WJR station and in the foreground the new turntable of the locomotive shed circa 1908. The brickwork on the well of the turntable looks new and the photograph was therefore taken about the time when the turntable was transferred from No 1 road of the shed (as seen in image 'smjsa55') to the new position. Beyer Peacock locomotives are prominent with one 2-4-0T locomotive tank and possibly two 0-6-0 tender engine. Of interest is the very short water crane which doesn't look high enough to clear the tender although its probably all right for the 2-4-0T locomotives, and what would have been a novelty on most railways at this time, the electric light lamppost alongside the turntable. The use of white paint for poles, posts, edges of turntables and even platforms proves that the often quoted reason for their being used was 'during the First or Second World Wars' is a myth.
