Ex-Midland Railway 1F 0-6-0T No 1856 is seen having a brief respite between duties during its shunting of 'dead' engines at Saltley shed to ready them for their next trips on 14th August 1937. The tool box, seen on the running plate as also seen in image 'mrsalt81' has obviously suffered some damage. Built by Sharp Stewart in January 1895, No 1856 unlike No 1879 still has its original boiler fittings and remained in service until withdrawn from Saltley in July 1951 to scrapped the same month by Derby works.
