View taken on 12th February 1940 of the main entrance to the yard for road vehicles entering via Pitsford Street. This is the northern end of Pitsford Street with the new 'Top shed' being developed on the left. Beyond the gates, in the middle distance, a single storey building can be seen. This was the site of the stables now being used for a variety of purposes including a bicycle shed for staff and due to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of this part of the yard. The stable block was so extensive it reached this gate which was several hundred feet away from the office block. The demolition of the stable block can be seen in image 'gwrhd685a'. The weigh bridge and office are immediately beyond the gates. At the time of the photograph, the main cartage deck, which is on the left, was still in the early stages of construction.
