GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley and Duddeston: gwrhd685a
This close up of image 'gwrhd685' shows the area to the
north of the office block, the latter housing the accounts and correspondence
departments of the goods yard. The single storey buildings, seen at the office
block, were originally built all the way along Pitsford Street to the Top gate
beyond the "Outwards" shed and housed the stables.
By this time the stables were relocated and the remaining
buildings were converted to other uses including bicycle sheds. The area to the
right of the office block was, according to Frank Popplewell, known to the
staff as the "Farm" but for what ever reason he never knew. Six months after
this photograph was taken the offices were badly damaged in the heaviest raid
on Birmingham of the Second World War.
