View of the original E&WJR station showing the building prior to the extension and with the shorter platform canopy. The platform canopy whilst shorter did not overpower the architecture of the building as did the later design albeit it was less useful in providing protection to passengers from inclement weather. The original water crane would have been easier to use than its later replacement as seen in image 'smjsa44a' as it long arm would have allowed the 'bag' to be positioned without too much physical effort. The cage below the wheel on the column supplemented the 'fire devil' on the left as it would have contained a small fire in very cold weather to protect the wheel from freezing and the arm to be rotated.
