SMJ 2-4-0T No 5 on a Woodford & Hinton passenger train with a SMJ horse box and two GCR carriages

An SMJ 2-4-0T stands at the head of a passenger train en-route to Woodford & Hinton with an SMJ horse box and two Great Central Railway carriages bound for Marylebone, London. Kineton was in the heart of a rich agricultural area of Warwickshire with the headquarters of the Warwickshire Hunt situated at nearby Little Kineton. Part of the Hunt’s territory lies in the far-flung west of the county which explains why the SMJ bought a hound van from the Great Eastern Railway in 1909. This van together with a number of horse boxes was kept at Kineton and all were used to convey horses, riders and hounds to Broom Junction for meets in that area. At such meetings the inspector from Stratford-upon-Avon would attend to supervise the loading and despatch of this important traffic. The photographer is standing on the road looking down on the up platform. In the foreground can be seen an open gate which was at the bottom of the pathway from Wellesbourne Road.
