In the six foot (the space between the two sets of rails) is a ground signal used to control the access to the crossover which can just be seen on the left rail. This provided access to and from the goods yard independent of the crossover beyond the road bridge. This provided a degree of flexibility on this single line route as a short train could stand at the down platform whilst traffic could still access or leave the goods yard.
