Ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 43627 trundles through Whitacre Junction at the head of a Derby to Birmingham freight

Ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 43627 trundles through Whitacre Junction at the head of a Derby to Birmingham freight on a wet winters day circa 1959. Built by Derby works in 1899, No 43627 was renumbered by British Railways in June 1948 which it carried until June 1960 when it was withdrawn to be scrapped. On the left is the new British Railways London Midland Region's 'running-in board' or nameboard in the corporate colours of maroon background and white lettering. These Johnson 0-6-0 locomotives were built between 1875 and 1908 by the Midland Railway's own shops at Derby and various external suppliers. Originally designed by Samuel W Johnson the design was further developed by his successor, Richard Deeley. The Midland Railway ordered 935 of these 0-6-0 goods tender engines. Although there were many (mostly small) variations between different batches both as delivered and as successively rebuilt, all 935 can be regarded as a single series, one of the largest classes of engine on Britain's railways. Members of the class survived as late as 1964, but none of them now survive.
