View of Wilnecote Station's main station building seen from the western side of Watling Street bridge

View of Wilnecote Station's main station building seen from the western side of Watling Street bridge. This photograph was taken adjacent to the main road at the top of the ramp which led down to the northbound or up platform. The photographer is looking directly across to the original Birmingham and Derby Railway station building on the platform for Birmingham trains. If the clock in the picture is working, it was taken at 15:35 hours on 21st March 1967. The station building is of red brick with blue brick detailing around the doors and windows. The single story element on the left with the stepped parapet could be part of the original building, and features a blocked former doorway onto the platform. The right hand part of the ground floor with the larger window was in use as a waiting room at the time of the photograph. In the extreme bottom left hand corner of the photograph is a maroon enamel sign fixed to the bridge stating bluntly that “passengers must not cross the line”. The posters on the wall advertise the British and Irish Steam Packet Company's ferries from Liverpool to Dublin, and also ferries to Belfast. To the left of the base of the building's chimney stack, the door into the street level ticket office can just be seen. To the left, the parapet of the widened A5 road bridge can be seen with the massive concrete beams of the widened structure and the old stonework of the original railway arch just visible below. The building behind the station chimney stack is the Railway Hotel; the station bicycle shed can also be seen clearly on the right.
