LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

Tamworth High Level Station: mrthl1836

Looking from the up platform at Tamworth High Level towards Derby, from just north of the LNWR tracks. On the wall of the brick building on the left are two gas lit lamps, the two opening and closing cords quite visible. The base of Tamworth High Level Signal Box, which opened on 8th August 1925 by the LMS to replace two earlier MR signal boxes, Tamworth North and Tamworth South, was squeezed in to the narrow space available on the platform. Above the base the signal box was of a standard design cantilevering out over the platform to enhance the view of the signalman. The wagons at the end of the platform are on the nearer of the two Midland sidings, whilst more wagons are lying on the down siding. Signal 21, the Down home, is visible above the wagons on the down siding and is shown in the signalling diagram as per image 'mrthl1837'.
