View of the Worcester - Birmingham Canal being drained adjacent
to Bristol Road bridge during May 1955. Sheet piling has been driven in to the
canal on either side of the bridge creating two dams with the water in between
being drained by pump. In the foreground is a British Waterways narrow boat
being used to transport timbers and sheet piles. The canals were once owned by
the railways and were nationalised in parallel with the railways in 1948.
British Waterways became responsible for some 2,200 miles of canals and
navigable rivers.
