LMS 4P 4-4-0 No 1078, LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 3926 and LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 4981 stand on the coaling road during 1948. On the right is one of Stanier's 2-6-4T two-cylinder tank locomotives which despite its 4MT classification by British Railways was primarily employed on suburban passenger services. The layout of the yard was redesigned in the 1930s to increase productivity by applying better methods in coaling and watering as well as disposing of the locomotives after their work. At Saltley this was addressed by building a two road coaling tower with water cranes being made available for locomotives either as they approached or left the plant. The Compound No 1078 was built at Derby works in November 1924 and remained in service until August 1958 when it was withdrawn from Saltley shed. The 4F Goods was also built by Derby works, in 1920, and remained in service until August 1959 when it was withdrawn from Barrow Road shed in Bristol. Finally the Black Five was built by Crewe works in July 1946 and it remained in service until January 1967 when it was withdrawn from 6D Shrewsbury shed.
