The LNWR had merged with the L&Y in January 1922 a year before the formation of the LMS and this had resulted in a number of L&Y locomotives being transferred to the Midlands, notably Nuneaton and Rugby. Built as L&Y No 1070 to the L&Y class 11 design at Horwich in December 1890 it was renumbered by British Railways as No 52111 which it carried until it was withdrawn in March 1951 from Edge Hill shed.
