During the early 1950s British Railways initially implemented a different modernisation programme to the one most remembered today that of introducing diesel locomotive power and the withdrawal of steam. The earlier modernisation programme focused on introducing a new standard range of locomotives for use on all regions and also concentrated on improving the facilities at sheds. This modernisation saw many sheds rebuilt or upgraded and in the case of Saltley, new offices and staff facilities too. As with the introduction of the new locomotives much of this investment was wasted with most facilities lasting only a very short time with some sheds closed within two years of being rebuilt. 14th Nov 1958
