LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 8647 sports a 17A Derby shed plate whilst standing in front of another classmate on one of Saltley's stabling roads

LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 8647 sports a 17A Derby shed plate whilst standing in front of another classmate on one of Saltley's stabling roads on 1st December 1946. The lamppost on the left has been crudely modified by the removal its original lantern type lamp to be replaced with a downward pointing lamp shade. This modification, together with having the lower part of the post painted white, were precautions adopted during the Second World War. Built in December 1943 by the Southern Railway at their Brighton works No 8647 remained in service until April 1966 when it was withdrawn from Sutton Oak shed to be scrapped in July 1966 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
