Ex-LMS 4-6-0 6P 46132 'The Kings Regiment Liverpool' stands
outside Saltley No 3 shed in May 1962. Originally a member of Henry Fowler's
'Royal Scot' class, the locomotive was rebuilt by Stanier replacing the
parallel boiler with the tapered boiler seen above. Built in September 1927 by
North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, No 46132 was to remain in service
until February 1964 when it was withdrawn from 12A Kingmoor shed in Carlisle.
From late 1961, the locomotive was briefly allocated to 21A Saltley shed, but
at the time of this photograph, it was about to be transferred via Leeds to
Carlisle. In the right-background can be seen the machine conveyor used to load
the special coal for the British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0s, No 92165 to No
92167 which were fitted with mechanical stokers. These locomotives were used
for the Washwood Heath to Carlisle long-distance fast goods trains via the
Settle and Carlisle line. It had been found that coal from the coal plant was
too variable in size, so to avoid jamming the stoker feed-screw, recourse was
made to a fuel comprising cobbles.
