Ex-LMS 4MT 2-6-4T No 42436 stands cold and in line at the rear of Saltley shed's No 3 roundhouse. Designed by Sir William Stanier they were a two-cylinder version of his three-cylinder class built for the LMS' Tilbury and Fenchurch lines in London. Both the two and the three cylinder classes were a development of Sir Henry Fowler's successful two-cylinder parallel boilered 2-6-4T locomotive. In total 206 locomotives of the above design were built between 1935 and 1943. Built by Derby works to Lot 128 in April 1936, No 42436 was to remain in service until June 1966 when it was withdrawn from 10D Lostock Hall shed.
