Ex-MR 2F 0-6-0 No 22818, a Kirtley outside curved framed locomotive, is seen buffered up to the stops on one of Saltley shed's stabling roads on 24th Aug 1935. The shed staff must have been having a joke with someone with regard to the lamps placed on the front of the smokebox and bufferbeam as there was never a lamp code which required all four lamps to be displayed. In addition to having its cast iron smokebox number plate removed, No 22818 has Saltley's new LMS shed code '21A' chalked above the old MR/early LMS shed code '3' on a cast plate fixed to the smokebox door. Built as MR No 578 by the Vulcan Foundry in 1873, No 22818 remained in service until February 1947 when it was withdrawn from Bournville shed to be scrapped at Derby later the same year.
