LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton

Stockingford Station: mrs1082

Looking towards Birmingham from beneath the bridge carrying Whittleford Road over the railway in the 1950s

Looking towards Birmingham from beneath the bridge carrying Whittleford Road over the railway in the 1950s. The date must be prior to 1954 as there is no sign of British Railway's corporate signage being used at the station. The station sign seen on the down is pure Midland Railway in design and is angled so that passengers arriving from Nuneaton would see the station name in good time. Beyond the station on the right is Stockingford's Goods Shed and goods sidings in the near distance on the right. Just visible is Stockingford Ground Frame (see mrs1076) which controlled access to the goods yard and shed. Beyond the goods yard three locomotives can be seen standing in the main sidings used to marshal wagons being used to transport coal, bricks and tiles from the collieries and brickyards in the area. Of the three locomotives seen in steam at least one is an ex-L&YR locomotive. Their lightweight axle loading was required to operate the single line branch to Annesley Hall Colliery. The two storey building on the right accommodated the stationmaster and his family and may even have originally provided accommodation for other staff too. Its not known what purpose the small building on the right performed. However its general level of construction together with its tiled roof and stove pipe chimney would indicate that it played an important role in the operation of the station.
