Looking towards Nuneaton with Stockingford Goods shed on the left and Stockingford Signal Box on the right. The Ground Frame can be seen on the left as can the two sets of sidings which it controlled. According to Peter Lee in his article in British Railways Journal No 9, the signal box on the right was removed shortly after the photograph was taken in the 1930s. Peter doesn't state why the signal box was removed. The only conclusion is that the box was primarily used to control the locomotives entering and leaving Stockingford shed. Whilst the sidings used to marshal trains from Stockingford branch numbered ten in total - a set of three and a set of seven - the traffic entering and leaving the yard must not have been too intensive. Its assumed but not confirmed that the signal box located adjacent to the sidings at Haunchwood Colliery (Tunnel Pits) subsequently controlled Stockingford's signals and points. The evolution of the signals located on the Birmingham side of the down platform is shown first by image 'mrs424' where one post is used to mount two signal arms, followed by this image showing the suspended bracket signal seen above with two arms followed finally by 'mrs1082a' which shows the bracket signal with only one arm.
