LMS Route: Evesham to Birmingham
Redditch Station: mrred601
An unidentified Ivatt 2-6-0 2MT locomotive at the head of a
local passenger service to Ashchurch via Evesham in 1962. There was a 1 in 120
gradient at each end of the tunnel which was not an issue for passenger
services but for goods trains, which had to stop to take on water at the end of
the platform, it was a very different proposition. Redditch South Signal Box,
seen on the right, was opened by the LMS on 23rd August 1925 and remained open
until 29th January 1967. The lamppost on the right and foot boards crossing the
line were installed to aid the exchange of the token between locomotive and
signalman, required to enter or leave the single line section.
