LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton
Nuneaton Abbey Street Station: mrna49
Looking along the up platform from the Birmingham end of
Abbey Street station during the 1930s. In this view the Midland Railway three
arm signal gantry can be seen to be located at the Leicester end of the down
platform. This was because it was MR practice for their locomotives to be
driven with the driver standing on the right. The LMS, which absorbed the MR
along with the LNWR and others, adopted the practice of driving their
locomotives with the driver standing on the left which is why later views of
Abbey Street station show the signal gantry replaced by one located on the up
platform.
