LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton

Nuneaton Abbey Street Station: mrna1949

A pre-1873 plan of the original 1864 MR station at Nuneaton located on the Leicester side of Midland Road

A pre-1873 plan of the original 1864 MR station at Nuneaton located on the Leicester side of Midland Road, at the junction with the connecting line to the LNWR. Passenger trains to Leicester took the more southerly route, which was carried over the Trent Valley line north of the LNWR station. Goods trains took the other line, which had no platforms, to facilitate an interchange with the LNWR. The survey lines shows the projected route of the Ashby & Nuneaton line, which led to the original station being replaced in 1873. Note the two small hatched boxes. The hatched box to the right of the Midland Road bridge is the signal box seen in images 'mrna47' and 'mrna1911' whilst the hatched box recessed in to the embankment opposite the original station's down platform is the third signal box controlling Abbey Street station, junction and sidings. This latter box had to be removed because it was in the path of the new line to Ashby.
