Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 7F No 49120 and classmate No 48927 pass Abbey Street goods yard with a coal train from Ashby

Ex-LNWR 0-8-0 7F No 49120 and classmate No 48927 pass Abbey Street goods yard with a coal train from Ashby. On the right is Conners shed used for his cardboard business. Built as LNWR 1070, a B Class four-cylinder compound, in December 1902 by Crewe works, the locomotive went through a number of reincarnations, first as a simple cylinder G Class locomotive in August 1910, then a G1 Class in September 1933 when it was also renumbered as 9120, and finally as a G2a Class in September 1938. Renumbered as No 49120 by British Railways in September 1951, the locomotive continued in service until September 1959 when it was withdrawn from 2B Nuneaton shed. Its classmate also under went rebuilding on a number of occasions. Built as LNWR 1226, a B Class four-cylinder compound, in January 1903 by Crewe works it was rebuilt as a G1 Class locomotive in March 1926 and then, following it being renumbered as LMS 8927 in January 1928, it was rebuilt as a G2a Class locomotive in September 1947. Renumbered by British Railways as No 48927 in January 1950 it retained this number until November 1961 when it was withdrawn from 8A Edge Hill shed to be scrapped.
