Looking through the Midland Road bridge which carried the A47 road to Birmingham from the town centre

Looking through the Midland Road bridge which carried the A47 road to Birmingham from the town centre. Judging by the enamel station name board, running-in board to use the correct technical parlance, the photograph was taken in either the late 1950s or early to mid 1960s. Through the bridge you can see the junction where the lines diverged to Shackerstone (the Ashby & Nuneaton Joint line) left beyond the water tower, straight on to the Trent Valley main line, whilst the tracks diverging to the right went on to Leicester. The Midland Railway built Nuneaton Abbey Junction signal box can be seen controlling the array of lines at this point. Note at the end of the platform the boarded crossing which was often used 'illegally' by passengers crossing the line to reach the Leicester bound platform. The sign on the left at the bottom of the steps warns passengers not to use the boarded crossing and only to cross the line by using the road bridge.
