Ex-LMS 2-8-0 8F No 48538 is coupled to goods brake van D1659 allocated for departmental use on 21st November 1964. The locomotive is standing on the down passenger line whilst the vehicle partly seen on the right is standing on the up Camp Hill line. Bob Essery, who was a fireman at Saltley in the 1950s, states that the archway seen on the right was regularly used by Saltley enginemen when walking through to Lawley Street from the locomotive shed.
